Dream big, work hard

Where it began

Born and raised in West London, Mariella Heyn began baking aged 13 as a form of therapy and was keen to have her own business one day. Ten years later, Mariella started Skinny Bakery from her mother's kitchen in 2012, an idea fuelled by her desire to eat cake every day whilst still fitting into her jeans, with a keen interest in the science behind baking. With just £2,000 worth of savings, Mariella launched Skinny Bakery selling her bakes door to door, with a growing sales team, gaining valuable customer feedback and showcasing the brand at exhibitions including The Good Food Show and Ideal Home Show.

Some pretty big deals

Skinny Bakery moved into its first dedicated, small but mighty, production kitchen in 2014 in West London. In April 2014, Whole Foods Market stores nationwide began stocking our products as one of their top selling bakery lines. During this exciting time we had the pleasure of making bespoke cakes for a range of high-end clients including Little Mix, Sotheby's Auction House and Yasmin Le Bon. Mariella developed recipes for Women’s Health Magazine and her story was documented by Facebook in their series ‘She Means Business’ as well as The Daily Mail and BBC Radio.

Experiment and grow

With a growing social media following and loyal online customer base, in 2018 Skinny Bakery production relocated for the third time to its current premises in West London. Developing doughnuts, vegan bakes, made without gluten and made without dairy ranges, our core menu has expanded to 20 signature products. Offering classic flavours with a twist to provide an indulgent taste but as a lighter and healthier version. We swap high fat cream cheese for quark and chocolate ganache frosting for tofu as well as reduce the overuse of refined sugar in our bakes.

Till this day

Focussed on renewables, we’re proud to say our packaging is now plastic-free, made using compostable plant-based PLA and biodegradable card. To date, our treats are baked with real ingredients including Belgian chocolate, pure nut butters and fruit and veggie purees. We love experimenting with exciting new flavours and quirky ingredient substitutions. From S’mores to Pink Champagne flavour, we’ve launched over 50 limited edition varieties of our signature Pearls of which more than 4 million units have sold to date.
