As summer is among us, it is time to make the most of the weather and the gorgeous array of flowers blooming this season. We love the idea of DIY potpourri, a natural method of filling your room with a heavenly aroma.
They also make for great gifts, showing that you’ve put your heart and soul into making something personal and memorable.
Select some flowers depending on what kind of fragrance you would like. We love the smell of roses, lavender or chamomile. Include some spices and essential oils into the mix to add an even stronger scent.
Oils can have therapeutic properties that allow for a relaxing environment, very useful when unwinding after a long day!
Time to dry them out! Put the petals onto a smooth surface before covering with a baking sheet or newspaper. Leave for 2-3 days in a warm, dry place until the petals look nice and crispy.
Blend the petals together with the essential oils in a bowl. Make sure you don’t pour too much oil because the fragrance will be very overpowering!
Use a fixative such as orrisroot, which will absorb the oil and preserve the scent for longer.
Store your mix into a glass jar with a lid (a mason jar covered tightly with cling film will work too) and keep it sealed.
Leave for a few weeks, shaking the container every few days to combine the mixture.
You can place your potpourri in all sorts of places for display or storage, such as a bowl, candleholder, glass bottle or little sachets to keep your clothing, drawers or cupboards smelling fantastic.
To keep the scent lingering for as long as possible, freshen up your potpourri by adding more drops of your essential oils every few days.
